Why We Do It

Families undergoing crisis may be at risk of separation. Without the support of the community, children are often removed from their homes and put into the foster care system. Once in the system, it can take months or years before these families are successfully reunified and many never will be. Our goal is to step in before this happens.

  • To support family preservation by connecting parents in crisis with community relationships and partnering organizations.

  • A community united to keep families together.

  • Community, Empowerment, Connection, and Respect

How We Do It

With well-rounded support from community partners, generous volunteers, and compassionate staff, we create a village of support around the families we serve.

Supporting People with Genuine Community

At The Village Durham, we believe in supporting, empowering and advocating for people in our community who may be hurting and we know the best way to do that is in relationships. We train and equip individuals or groups to become Family Advocates and assign them to a family to care for. Each family will have different needs, but advocates may be performing duties like meeting up for coffee, cooking a meal together, providing transportation to a doctors appointment, or doing research on the family’s behalf.

Connecting Families to Local Organizations

Many families who are at risk of separation have a real physical need that can be met by partnering organizations in our community. We are looking to partner with organizations that offer help in job training, employment, housing, nutrition, mental health, parenting education, and more. The Village seeks to bridge the gap between the family and the organizations by first understanding the family’s need, thoughtfully submitting referrals, and ensuring the partnership is successful through continued support and guidance.
